INTUITIVE TURKISH COFFEE GROUND READING

Coffee Cup Readings

Reading coffee grounds is a psychic activity during which the remaining grounds after drinking a cup of coffee are studied and ‘read’, just like ‘reading’ a crystal ball. In the Middle East, its original land, it is considered to be a seer’s art passed from one generation to another – like the reading of tea leaves which is better known in the West. Although Arabs and people from the Near East, Mediterranean, and Asia are also serious tea drinkers, it was in the grounds deposited at the bottom of a coffee cup where they sought clues to their fortune. The patterns and designs formed on the inside of the cup trigger the psychic’s insight and are interpreted according to what they mean to the seer.

Reading someone’s ‘fortune’ has always been a common practice in my home country, Turkey. While friends often read each other’s coffee cups for trivial issues, prior to critical decisions a professional reader, usually an elderly female, is invited to women’s gatherings. Not only their psychic talents are recognized but these women are also renowned for their wisdom and counseling skills.

How does it work?

The symbols in the coffee cup are believed to reflect different levels of consciousness. They give us information about one’s past, present, and future. No wonder the reading is also considered as one’s communication with her own soul. Things stored at the unconscious level, such as pain from past traumas, fears, and emotions, may appear in the form of various symbols during the reading. The key role of the reader in such cases is to be able to provide proper counseling. The real essence of coffee grounds reading is to help people release that fear, pain, confusion, and anxiety. By looking at the story that is revealed in the coffee cup I try to present a perspective which may enable one to see the ‘reality’ under a new light devoid of psychological and cultural restraints.
